(I liked this one the most so thought I would pass it on)
Twitter is notorious for going down when you need them the most. I was in the prickly spot of having my rice bowl cut off simply because I could not do any money-getting efforts on my one-and-only marketing medium. Ouch.
Diversify. Stop relying on ONE traffic method and you’ll be invulnerable to Google Slaps, Twitter Fail Whales and other system failures.
As you can probably tell by the age, I am not the author of this article, but I liked where this person was going.
My own point is this: there is a lot of discussion around whether people need websites any longer and, as many people have found out the hard way, YOU ABSOLUTELY DO NEED A HOME BASE THAT YOU ARE IN CONTROL OF! Twitter and Facebook can be fickle friends, as has been seen by people having their Twitter and Facebook accounts either accidentally shut down, in the case of Twitter, or purposely shut down by Facebook (even for no apparent reason).
Use social media, but keep your own site going on your own domain name. It is very valuable real estate.
