Like you, I had the dream of being self employed.
I even dreamed of having a business that allowed me to work with my clients no matter where (in the world) I was at that moment! So I set out to explore the possibilities. After a bit of research I quickly saw that there were some really savvy women making startlingly good money doing what I had been doing all along at my previous jobs.
I purchased a couple of online Virtual Assistant training programs and set out to apply my secretarial and admin support experience to the online world. Although I enjoyed working with my clients and offering my secretarial/support skills, I became very interested in WordPress after taking a training program.

Immediately, I could see that a WordPress website is the most game changing skill I could offer women entrepreneurs/small business owners who were bringing their businesses online. After all, WordPress is the best tool you can have to get your business found online quickly. It just gives an edge that can’t be had with a traditional website.

So here I am today, three four years later, happily creating WordPress sites and mentoring women through the online business world. I might add that these last 5 years have seen me on a tremendous learning curve . It’s been such a struggle for so many and most of us have experienced the crazy heights and daunting lows. But overall I wouldn’t change a thing.
The Savvy VA facts and timeline:
- Founded The Savvy VA in early 2008 offering a variety of secretarial/support skills
- Late 2008 began offering WordPress site builds and support
- August 2009, crashed my own WordPress site and lost all of my content
- August 2009, changed my business model to offer WordPress services exclusively
- January 2010, started to offer my on-site “WordPress Site in a Day™” course
- March 2011 added online training called WordPress is Simple which is a complete program including installing WordPress to adding bells and whistles (with lots of bonuses too).
- January 2012 added coaching to my business (after all, I was certified as a coach many years ago)
- The Savvy VA’s 5th anniversary February 8th 2013
What else? I am an accomplished artist and designer. Working with textiles brings me great joy and I’ve won a fairly prestigious award in the recent past for a piece in my “Women’s Warrior Wear” collection.
Committed to lifelong learning, my educational pursuits include training as a life skills coach way back in 1992. Forever on a quest for more knowledge, I have studied textile arts, cultural anthropology, and art history. As mentioned earlier, I love to travel and intend to do more of it. Some of the more exotic locales I’ve traveled to include Spain and Morocco; but I’ve visited many of the US states including Hawaii, and have been to Mexico several times.
While volunteering as an ESL teacher in Vancouver, I had the pleasure of meeting people from all over the world and I’ve kept in touch with several of them who’ve offered their homes should I ever care to visit. Given that my business is completely online and I can work from anywhere as long as there is internet, I just might be taking some of them up on their offer very soon. (The power of intention is amazing).
