Will Google’s major upcoming change seriously affect your business?

algorithm

Google announced in February 2015 that they will be changing their algorithm to include mobile ready sites as a marker in determining ranking in the search results. To quote them:

When it comes to search on mobile devices, users should get the most relevant and timely results, no matter if the information lives on mobile-friendly web pages or apps. As more people use mobile devices to access the internet, our algorithms have to adapt to these usage patterns.

Starting April 21, we will be expanding our use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in our search results.

What this means is that to get a high ranking in the search results, or to continue getting good ranking, the theme on your WordPress site must be mobile friendly.  For example, the STUDIOPRESS themes have been mobile friendly for a very long time. These are the themes that I use exclusively when I build a WordPress website.

If you don’t know whether your site is ready for this change in the algorithm, click here to go to GOOGLE’S SITE where they have a tool in the sidebar to confirm whether your site’s theme is mobile friendly. It’s fast and easy to do, and well worth your time.

If you find that your theme is not mobile friendly, CONTACT ME as I have a package available that will update your site to an awesome mobile theme and get you ready for Google’s change.

Get Website Traffic Fast! 5 Quick Tips

KeyIf you are running an online business, you already know that getting traffic to your site is the single most important key to it all. Right?

In fact, you spend time writing amazing content, you have great products and/or services to offer, and you’re a great person and business owner — basically you’ve got it all. Except traffic.  And yet the more traffic, the more serious visitors; the more serious your visitors, the better your sales and profits will be.

So what exactly does an online business have to do to get noticed among the millions of other sites — some doing/selling exactly what you are doing/selling? It’s not easy, but with repeated efforts you can and will get noticed.

First, I am assuming that you have a niche (narrowed down what you sell, or what you offer for services), and you know how to determine your keywords, and your regularly conduct keyword research so you know what is popular. If not, you need to. Why? Because this is what will help your business get found online. For more information on keywords and keyword research, this is a great article

Here are 5 ways to get traffic to your site, quickly

1. Use your keywords

  • in your titles. Your title is where you place your primary keyword or keyword phrase.
  • in your first two or three sentences of all pages and posts.  These sentences should describe your business/offering/service in 90 characters or less.
  • to populate any fields that are available for SEO in your theme (usually under your post/page)
  • and create a traffic and SEO strategy

2. Add content to your site as often as you can, but preferably every day

Content gets you traffic, plain and simple.  Google loves fresh content and actively searches for it so they can index it into that great encyclopedia in cyberspace. Give search engines a reason to visit, not to mention your own returning visitors. People love to read content from those they like and trust, so give it to them.

3. Place links to your other content whenever you can (called interlinking)

Google bots like to follow links. If you have related content on another page, place a link to it within the content you are currently working on. The bots will follow your link to the page your are linking to so that they can index that content as well. Win-win.

4. Get incoming links to your site

Google also likes websites that have incoming links. It shows the site’s popularity, and increases the search engines’ perception of how valuable your site is.  And you know what they say about being popular. The search engines are kind of snobbish that way too.

Keep in mind that search engines give more ranking to links from sites that are popular and credible, and relevant to your site’s content.

What are links?

A direct link looks like this: www.yourwebsite.com

A text link is, as mentioned above, embedded in the text. Readers can click on the link and are redirected to another page on your site

Encouragement might be required so try the following:

  • Adding lots of fresh, relevant content
  • Submit articles about your niche to article directories
  • Being active on Social networking sites.

5. Be Social!

As mentioned in tip #4, now more than ever before, internet marketing is about building a community. Whether you offer a forum on your website or you participate in social networking sites, social networking is a valuable traffic generating tactic. Sites like Facebook and Twitter are powerful tools for generating links and traffic to your site – create a profile and then post comments and ideas that generate conversation.

Outline your plan, set your goals, and then take the necessary action.

What Search Engines Do and How this Affects Your Website’s Search Rankings

What Search Engines Do

What is a Search Engine?

search engine is designed to search for information on the internet. The search results are presented in a list of results referred to as SERPS, or “search engine results pages”. The search results can consist of web pages, images, information and other types of files.

Some search engines also mine data available in databases or open directories. Unlike web directories which are maintained by human editors, search engines also maintain real-time information by running an algorithm on a web crawler.

 There are 2 main components

  • English: a chart to describe the search engine...The Crawler (bots, spiders) go out to the internet and crawl the content they find.
  • The Algorithm, or the ranking formula, that the search engines use to determine the relevancy of your content.

How they do their magic

 Indexing

This is very simplistic, but essentially the search engines send out their bots to crawl the internet every 28 days. It crawls the internet by following links. This can be from one page on your site to another (interlinking) or from one website to another).  The search engine then builds a database containing a copy of each page of information it finds.

How to ensure that your content gets indexed:

  • Search engine optimizing your content is like spoon feeding the bots making their job as simple as possible.
  • Using keywords shows the general relevancy of your content, especially in searches
  • Creating remarkable content is how others find your content, note that it as remarkable, and link back to you.

Increasing prominence

  • There are several ways to increase the standing of a website within the search results.
  • Interlinking between pages provides additional links for the bots to follow and may improve the site’s visibility.
  • Writing content that includes highly searched keyword phrases is another way to  to increase traffic.
  • Updating content to keep search engines crawling your site frequently can also give additional weight to a site.
  • Adding relevant keywords to  your web page’s meta data (title tag and meta description) will improve the relevancy of a site’s search listings, thereby increasing traffic

In summary:

taking the simplest SEO steps will help the search engines find and index your content. As a result, your audience (target market, customer, client) will be more likely to find you, your content and site amidst a sea of similar products, services, and content on the internet.

This requires some time, effort and research, but the benefits are many and it is never too late! There are both free and paid plugins that you can install on your WordPress site that will help you to use SEO strategies on each post and page of your site.

The Secret to Getting More Visitors To Your Site Part 1

The secret to getting more visitors to your site, part 1You’ve probably heard the term ‘SEO’ a lot

and you know you should do it, but wonder where to start.  This post will shed some light on what SEO means and why it’s important.

SEO is the shortened term for Search Engine Optimization.  As an online business and WordPress site owner, you need to know that SEO is what helps drive visitors to your website.  And without visitors…well you know.

Search engines have names like Google, Yahoo, and Bing. When you are searching for information on the internet, you type your phrases or keywords into the Google, Yahoo, or Bing search field. Once you press Enter, you receive a page with a list of results.

A search engine is a program that searches documents on the World Wide Web for a specific word or phrase.  Dictionary.com

You may have heard this term before too, because it is often referred to as “the first page of Google“.  It is called this because what you are seeing is, literally, the first page of results based on your keywords and keyword phrases.

And keep this in mind for later in this post: Do you ever go to the second, third, or fourth page to find what you’ve been searching for? More than likely, you scan the results and click on a few that look like they match your search terms (words and phrases). This is how 99% of the people on the internet search for solutions to their problems.

Although it can be difficult because everyone else is vying for top position too,

all businesses on the internet need to be doing all they can to get their site to come up higher in the search engine results. Ideally, your goal should be to be represented on the first page or two of the search engine results.

Quick Tips For Getting Website Traffic Fast!

Traffic Tips for WordPress

arrow found the targetOne of the most important keys to success in your internet business is getting traffic to your WordPress site. Although the ideal is to get very targeted traffic, it remains that the more visitors you have, the more likely you are to make sales (and profits).

Highly targeted traffic is usually the result of having a clearly defined niche and clearly defined keywords that would attract your target market.  Take the time to do your keyword research — it will be worth it after you see your traffic start to increase.  Here is an excellent post about keywords and keyword research: Click here to read about keyword research

WordPress Traffic Tip #1  Make sure you’re using your keywords.

Spend some time optimizing your content by adding your keywords as close to the beginning of each post as possible.  Use bolding and italics on especially important words and make sure you use your categories and tags features as well.

Use one of the excellent WordPress SEO plugins (Headspace2 and All in One SEO are the best as of this date) and either set it up yourself if you are comfortable doing this, or hire an SEO specialist to set it up for you.

WordPress Traffic Tip #2  Add lots of fresh content to your site .

Three times per week is ideal as it is essential for attracting traffic and getting a good search engine ranking.  Each time you post fresh content, the search engine spiders come to crawl your site to look for the new information. Give visitors and search engines a reason to visit and index your site.

Make a commitment to yourself and your visitors to provide plenty of optimized content and your traffic will soar (and remember that you can post date your content)  See my Youtube video on how to post date content.    Click here to see the video

WordPress Traffic Tip #3 Be Social!

Internet marketing is about building a community.  Gone are the days when you could create those cheesy, in-your-face sales letters and sell your products. People have become much more descriminating and will click away from impersonal and heavy handed marketing.

Sites like Facebook, Youtube, and Twitter are powerful tools for generating links and traffic to your site – create profiles on them and post comments, add links to your site, and thoughts to generate conversation.

Get involved – have fun. Be fun, but professional. Look for forums that cater to your industry and begin participating.  Speak to and connect with your highly targeted audience.
