Recently I received a call from a client. He has a small insurance company just down the street from my home. He wondered if a WordPress site would be right for his business. Since he is a local insurance company he wasn’t sure if an Internet presence was appropriate or would help his business at all.
He explained to me that everyday, people call his offices asking about insurance issues. They want to know what is covered under this policy or that. What about driving in Europe. Often they are the same questions over and over, week in and week out.
As we were talking I started to think how interesting it would be to read blog posts from this guy who’s an industry expert. We discussed and brainstormed the many insurance related topics that he could blog about and how appreciative readers would be knowing that they are getting the inside scoop on the insurance business from an insider.
We discussed how he could write coverage, and policies in general. For example I don’t own a car at the moment, but I do rent from time to time. When I rent, I use a credit card that has has a complimentary insurance policy covering me for rental vehicles. They’ve always assured me that I’m covered 100%.
But I had a very good friend who is an insurance adjuster who told me a story about someone just like me who rented a vehicle and got into an accident. This person wasn’t worried and felt very secure that they were completely covered. Only later did he find out that they were not 100% covered. They actually ended up paying a lot of money out of pocket to cover the damage to the vehicles.
Wouldn’t it have been great for this person to have come across this blog before they rented the car. Armed with more insight, they could have opted to purchase the additional insurance that all rental offices offer.
We discussed how he gets this question over and over. A Canadian family going down the Disneyland wants to rent a vehicle while they are there, but are very concerned that they me not be fully covered while in California, (or the US in general).
We came up with a number of areas of the insurance industry that he could blog about, and I am quite sure he would gain a following, both local and beyond. I for one would subscribe and read the posts faithfully.
So what is your business? Are you a divorce lawyer who could put a lot of myths to rest if you blogged about what happens in a divorce. You could describe the goings on in the courtroom. You could discuss the variations around child custody. I’m quite sure you would receive a lot of fan mail with questions that would be fodder for future blog posts.
Or maybe you are an aesthetician who could blog about the many services that you offer, or about the products that you sell. You could discuss which treatments are good for which conditions. You could discuss things like how to shape eyebrows or how to apply eye cream properly. You could give hints about applying makeup properly and how to clean your skin afterward.
This would be another blog that I would subscribe to and read every post because these are everyday sayings that people want to know about and until the Internet and until blogs, have never really had the opportunity to get this information.
How about a veterinarian who blogs about conditions and treatments of animals. One who is willing to discuss issues around preventive medicine for animals. About which foods really are good for animals. He or she could blog about conditions that certain animals get, such as large breeds that get hip dysplasia and why.
They could discuss how to choose a breed of dog that would be appropriate for you, your family, and your lifestyle. Here’s another blog that I would definitely subscribe to I would love to read every day or every week or whatever however often this person blogs about taking care of my pets. It would be a wonderful blog to receive in my RSS feed or in my e-mail however frequently they blog.
